Seven iodine-rich foods

Iodine is an essential mineral that we must take in our diet. It is especially important for the proper functioning of the thyroid gland, as well as performing an antioxidant action.

According to data processed by the National Observatory for Monitoring Iodoprophylaxis in Italy (OSNAMI), 29% of the world's population has an iodine deficiency. However, most of us need to get iodine in food as well. Iodine is a relatively rare trace element and is more abundant in seawater, so to avoid any deficiency it is recommended to eat marine fish and algae.

An iodine deficiency could lead to a condition known as goiter (a bulge in the neck), due to the expansion of the thyroid. Iodine deficiency can also lead to damage to the nervous system (in severe cases).
