What to do in case of a bee, wasp and hornet sting

A large number of people, at least once in their lives, experience the unpleasant experience of being stung by insects such as bees, wasps and hornets.

Stung most often are mostly wasps, which are more aggressive in nature when disturbed. In most cases, one only feels pain (and may have some swelling) in the area affected by the sting and is rarely a cause for concern.

In most cases there is no need to be alarmed
In most cases of being stung by bees, wasps and hornets, there is no need for treatment as the consequences tend to be short-lived. The pain, redness and swelling caused by the venom injected by the insect affect a part of the skin that can range from 2 to 4 centimetres. If no adverse reactions occur, there is hardly any cause for alarm then. Simply ice the affected area or use cortisone or antihistamines.

Any major adverse reactions
It is estimated that about 10% of people stung by bees, wasps and hornets may experience severe reactions. These include dyspnoea, nausea and vomiting, hives or a drop in blood pressure. In this case it may be necessary to consult a doctor.

Anaphylactic shock
Without doubt, the most prominent adverse reaction when it comes to insect bites is anaphylactic shock, i.e. a strong - and often fatal - allergic reaction. Although a rare reaction, it can result in fainting, cardiovascular arrest, numbness, dizziness and a significant drop in blood pressure. In this case, it is absolutely necessary to go to the emergency room.

When it is necessary to investigate
If, after being stung by a bee, wasp or hornet, you have experienced extensive local reactions or a generalised reaction, it is advisable and necessary to consult a doctor so that you can establish your risk level with more certainty.
