Smart working and health, possible repercussions on the body

The use of smart working is becoming increasingly common and while this may be perfect for both workers and companies, for the former it often also means paying more attention to one's health.

Making greater use of smart working often means having a much more sedentary lifestyle, with all that this can entail for one's health, in terms of a greater propensity to develop certain ailments or diseases.

According to a recent analysis by the American newspaper 'The Hill', the use of smart working could be linked, for example, to sleep disorders (less restful than it should be), lack of relaxation, thrombosis problems and even mental health disorders. All this despite the fact that the majority of Americans who have switched to smart working seem to like this type of remote working.

Insufficient physical activity
Among the main consequences of smart working, however, would be insufficient physical activity, which according to the World Health Organisation would cause more than three million deaths per year. According to a survey conducted by the Upright app in 2022, 54 per cent of smart working or hybrid workers said that their physical movement during the day would decrease by at least 50 per cent.

What would be the main health risk of smart working if not managed correctly? That of causing possible blood clots that could then raise the risk of deep vein thrombosis episodes. Hence the serious risk of having pulmonary embolisms or blood flow blockages.

Other problems that sedentary smart working may cause include weight gain, increased insulin resistance (with the risk of developing diabetes or cardiovascular disease). Also not to be underestimated are the problems that excessive time spent in front of a computer monitor can cause eyesight fatigue.
