Fibromyalgia, what it is and what the symptoms may be

Fibromyalgia is a syndrome that mainly presents itself with intense pain in the muscles, ligaments and tendons. The most difficult aspect of this syndrome is that it is often very difficult to diagnose but at the same time very disabling for sufferers.

The difficulty in diagnosis is due to the fact that fibromyalgia presents symptoms very similar to other clinical conditions.

Let's try to understand more about the possible causes, what the symptoms may be and how to intervene. (Source: grupposandonato.it)

The possible causes of fibromyalgia
The possible causes of fibromyalgia are currently unknown. In fact, it is speculated that this syndrome may be triggered by a number of factors, both genetic and environmental. Fibromyalgia could be triggered by stress caused in turn by a disease, bereavement, psychological or physical trauma. Recent studies have found that fibromyalgia could be triggered by alterations in chemical mediators such as neurotransmitters at the central level or hormones.

The possible symptoms of the syndrome
As far as symptoms are concerned, the most common ones of fibromyalgia are: diffuse muscle pain, irritable colon, intimate burning, sleep disturbances, chronic fatigue and difficulty concentrating. The symptoms that appear are usually multiple and this causes this condition to be called a syndrome.

The difficulty of diagnosis
As mentioned, fibromyalgia is very difficult to diagnose since its symptoms are non-specific and shared with many other diseases of various kinds. It can often be confused with multiple sclerosis but the latter is a neurological disease, which has well-defined diagnostic criteria.

The role of nutrition
Although there is currently no proven correlation between the type of diet followed and the efficacy of food on fibromyalgia symptoms, some patients have reported benefits from following a lacto-vegetarian diet. Patients are generally advised to avoid fried and processed condiments, caffeine, and refined and packaged foods (the latter should at least be limited). They are also advised to favour the consumption of complex carbohydrates, fish, white meat, fruit and seasonal vegetables.
